"How the pill changes everything" by Dr Sarah E. Hill

 📖📖📖

Recently I have had a spark of curiosity about how our hormones affect our bodies and am especially of my fellow woman gender group.

This lead me to read "How the pill changes everything" by Dr Sarah E. Hill. There were very interesting studies and explanations for things that affect women EVERYDAY and yes some re explanatory but it was just very interesting to me that these experiences, no matter how big or small, happen, with or without consciousness, through out every month for non-pill taking women and how taking the pill actually effect them.

In this blog post I am not trying to influence anyone's decision on whether or not taking the pill, or not, is good or bad. I jut simply want a place where I can share all these interesting things I have learnt through this book and where I can come back and reflect on it anytime I want too. So what better place to do it while sharing it with you guys on my little blog? I believe that people learn better by sharing the learnt information with others as it really sparks conversations and makes it stick in your brain for longer or even forever so that is also why I have decided to share this information with you. Again, I am not trying to influence you or your decision AND I am not a doctor by any means so please discuss medical concerns with your qualified GP or Gynecologist!!

So with keeping that in mind; here is what I found interesting...

1. 'I find you attractive' study:

Women and men are equally likely to go out on a date however women are less likely to go back to their dates apartment and have sex with them whereas 80% of men, in this study, said they would. The book explains that this is because this increases the chance that the women may get pregnant and being pregnant is more 'costly' to women when compared to men. If you would like to learn more on that topic you can read the pages 16-21 in the book.

2. Parental vs maternal closeness:

A study found that mothers' facial resemblance did not predict the emotional closeness with their children. However the more facial resemblance the child has to the father will give off a stronger emotional closeness feeling and the less facial resemblance to the father will give of a weaker feeling of emotional closeness. In other words, for a father to feel emotionally close to their child they need to feel like they resemble each other whereas for the mother it does not matter how similar they look because they will feel emotionally close anyway.

4. Men and Testosterone:

Men with higher levels of testosterones, in evolutionary terms, have a higher interest in impressing mates so that they could possibly spread their genes. However men's testosterone levels also change. Surprisingly, a man in a long-term relationship will have a lower level of testosterone produced than a single and 'ready to mingle male'.

A study measured men's testosterone levels twice across 4 1/2 years. Time 1, when they are single and childless, and time 2, when they have a long-term relationship and children. The study found that men with higher testosterone in time 1 were more likely to settle down and have children by time 2. They also found that as age rises the testosterone levels within a male drops. They also found that men who became fathers have a, more than double, decrease in testosterone than their fellow childless men. The fathers who spent approximately more than 3 hours caring for their children showed a very steep decline compared to all the male participants.

5. Newly weds afterglow:

The book mentions that a "sexual afterglow is the lingering feelings of increased sexual satisfaction that continues after an act of sex". In a study they found that the strength of this afterglow actually predicted martial satisfaction. Now the boo doesn't really into what relationship these two things have together but I'm going to make a wild guess and say that the stronger the afterglow is the more satisfaction there is, right?

6. Ovulating women in a romantic partnership:

When a woman ovulates there are secret cues that our body gives off to 'show' other people that. At a high ovulation point women tend to look, feel, sound, and even smell sexier than another at a low ovulation point and people tend to pick this up. This can somewhat explain why women are so wary when their partner is around other ovulating women.

7. The ovulating dancers study:

A study that took place in a strip club shows these exact effects. They found that dancers earned much more when they were close to ovulation and earned a bit less within other parts of their natural cycle. Surprisingly women on the pill earned less than the minimum amount the natural cycling ladies did and this amount did not fluctuate at different times, it just stayed the same.

Another study investigated whether a women's silhouette of body movements were more or less attractive to men during differed points of ovulation in their cycle. They found that men significantly preferred the body movements when at a high ovulation point of the cycle compared to the low point of the ovulation cycle.

8. Women's ovulation influence men's hormones too:

Apparently men also find the scent of vaginal secretion less intense and more pleasant when a women is in the high ovulation phase compared to a low one. There was a finding that men's testosterone actually increased after smelling a t-shirt worn by near ovulating women and decreased in non-ovulating, aka the luteal phase, women.

When men were asked to smell cotton that was under a women's armpit while she was ovulating and another when she was no the results found was that when the men smelt the ovulating cotton they had a higher interest in sex and an increase in stress hormones, similar to the results found in the above study.

9. Choosing a partner on the pill and divorce:

I was somewhat surprised when I read that women who chose their partner when they were on the pill were less likely to get divorced and if they did get a divorce they were usually the ones who initiated it. Dr Sarah Hill explains that this may be because the contraceptive pill makes women focus their attention of finding a partner with more stable caring characteristics and not focus in on their attractiveness, as much, as non-pill taking women. This was interesting to me because another study found that their female participants who found a partner on the pill were less attractive or satisfied within their relationship. No matter what the research says it's a couples choice to figure out and decide their own future, on the pill or not.

10. Attractive spouses and the pill:

A study found that women who chose a partner when they were not taking the pill and then started taking it had a decrease in their sexual satisfaction, mostly due to how the pill affects women's libido. However on a more positive note these women's marital satisfaction did not change meaning that they still care deeply about their partner but the pill has a major influence on the quality of their sex lives.

Researchers investigated whether being on the pill and then stopping and visa versa would influence how they feel about their partner and relationship. If a non-pill taking women starts to take the pill they found that there is a decrease in sexual satisfaction. Women who were on the pill and stopped and they were still having a decrease in sexual satisfaction. Researchers believe that this may be due to the different type of people the women tend to go for. Pill taking women tend to go for more feminine features and once they stop the pill they may be more attracted to more masculine again which means that they may not be as attractive to their partner they chose while taking the pill. So a women's martial satisfaction, good or bad, is somewhat dependent on how attractive their partner is.

Pill taking women tend to be less aware of sexy cues. Researchers presented women with two images of two males and asked the women to rate them on how attractive they look and asked if going off the pill has had an impact on their own relationship with their partner. Researchers found that women with more attractive partners had an increase in marital satisfaction when coming off the pill rather than being on it. Women with less attractive partners had a decrease of marital satisfaction when going off of the pill. This may be because the pill changes who we, women, are attractive too.

11. The pill influences our scenes:

Pill-taking women and natural cycling women are equally likely to become sensitive to non-sex-related scents like pepper-mint, lemon and rose. When it comes to sexy-smells there is a clear difference between the two groups of women. Natural cycling women were more sensitive to musk smells than women who were on the pill. Pill-taking women really need a lot of the smell to even notice it is there.

Women's preference to sight and sound also changes due to hormone changes.

12. Dendritic spines and Estrogen:

A women's brain changes throughout their cycle due to their changes of estrogen levels when contraception is and isn't possible. When more estrogen is present in the brain, the more dendritic connections are available hence the more sensitive the senses are to different senses compared to when there is less estrogen on the brain.

 13. The brain, libido and the pill:

Most of us know already that the pill affects a women's libido but it also affects what a women is sexually attracted to due to the change in the brain. A study showed women, pill-taking and natural cycling, explicit images to test if this may be true or not. They found that all the women looked mostly at the the genitals but also that pill-taking women became bored faster and looked at something else compared to natural cycling women hence the pill has potential to make women less interested in sex.

14. Oxytocin given to pill-taking women:

Pill-taking women are given oxytocin and they don't see partners any different from when they didn't have the oxytocin. They also don't feel an increase in the rewards center when looking at a picture of their partner. When they looked at a stranger and their partner is the exact same effect on the pill-taking women. This does affect the women's relationship as the oxytocin is the bonding hormone and by this having no effect on pill-taking women.

15. Stress hormone and the pill:

Pill-taking women report that they feel stressed out in response to a stress test but they did not have a rise in their cortisol level which can be a problem as the women can not change the way that they manage their stress. Cortisol is a hormone that is produced during stress, aka the stress hormone.

16. Hannah Bradshaw results:

Bradshaw found that pill-taking women did worse on exams than naturally cycling women but they were also more prone to give up easier when they were asked to do word puzzles. This effect may be because the pill changes a women's stress response which may affect the hippocampus which may result in these behavior's but it is still unclear.

17. Learning from a Denmark study:

Denmark is very good at keeping tracks of each individual within the populations health problems, conditions and medication which makes it easy to see how the population is reacting to different medications and treatments ect. When looking at this data, they found that 50%  of women who started the contraceptive pill were likely to be diagnosed with depression within six months. Women on the pill were 40% more likely to be prescribed an anti-depressant than non-pill taking women. Women on a hormonal contraceptive were twice as likely to commit suicide but this risk increases the younger the women is which is pretty scary since most teenagers and women don't actually hear this from their doctor. I know I didn't hear it from either of my doctors...

18. Pill and Politics:

A study from Durante (2012) found that single women at high fertility (aka high estrogen levels) were more liberal than those at low fertility (aka low estrogen levels). Partnered women at high fertility were more conservative than those at low fertility. This shows me that hormones actually do have an effect on everything, noticeable or not.

I really enjoyed reading this book, learning more about my body and how important our hormones can be. Whether you decide to stay on, start or end the pill it is your own decision and choice. No one should influence your choice but unfortunately some doctors don't know the facts or whole story of the pill which is why this book, and others, helps to shed some facts on things that we may not hear otherwise.

If you find these things interesting then I would definitely recommend reading the book for more information.

Monthly Journal Prompts

♥️ ♥️ ♥️

This year I have decided to do monthly journal prompts because why not, right?

I wanted to do them for the start of every month so that I can reflect on the previous month and think about how I can improve within the upcoming month.

I literally just finished my prompts for May before writing this and it took me about 10 minutes which isn't that long which means everyone can do it but the time sent on it will depend on how much you reflect.

Here are my personal 2023 monthly prompts:

1. What is your previous monthly highlight?

Aka. What moment or memory from last month do you treasure the most?

2. How do you want to feel this month?

3. What am I taking into this month from last month?

A good example of this would be like a habit or even a feeling.

4. What am I looking forward to this month?

5. What habit do I want to form this month?

I have been doing these prompts for about 3 months now, because I was on holiday in Jan, and so far they make me feel a bit more ready for the upcoming month.

I hope you enjoy working through them.

A weekend in Lake Ferry

✈ ✈ ✈

We went for a little road trip to Lake Ferry for the long-weekend. Here's some activities ideas that we did if you too want to plan a short weekend away.

We stayed at Te Wheke Lakeside Villas which has an amazing view overlooking the lake, however it is quite open for the public to look in, and believe me when I say that people are nosey. But overall it was a really nice stay and I am happy that we had the chance to experience it.

The first day we left Wellington and headed for Lake Ferry. We made a few stops on the way just for the fun of it.

Our first stop was at Birchville Dam:

Next was at the Twin Lakes Lookout over the Stuart Macaskill Lakes:

Then we stopped in the small town of Featherstone for lunch but most things were closed except for Baker which had really good cafe style food. I would definitely recommend their Cinnamon Rolls/Buns too!

Then our last stop before reaching Lake Ferry was at the Wairarapa Lake Shore Scenic lookout:

Day 2 we went the look at the Pinnacles:

And then we climbed about 253 stairs to the top of the Cape Palliser Lighthouse to admire the view:

On the way to the lighthouse we definitely stopped to take in the cuteness of the largest sealion colony in the North Island of New Zealand!

We started out last day with a walk on Lake Ferry Beach:

We headed out for lunch at The Vineyard Cafe in Martinborough:

Then we finally got home feeling relaxed and prepared for the new week ahead.

Eye-opener must read: Women don't owe you pretty by Florence Given.

 📖📖📖

If you follow me on Instagram you should see that I started a new highlight of book recommendations that I would like to share with you. I will only recommend the ones that leave an impact on me.

I recommended a book called "Women don't owe you pretty" by Florence Given and here is why...

Florence Given speaks her truth and explains her view of the patriarchy. She not only speaks about how the patriarchy affects us but gives us some solutions as to how we can solve them.

This book has made me realize why I care so much about certain things, such as how I look or why I care so much about how others perceive me or even why I get so jealous and defensive when I see a 'better' woman than me.

Not only does this book have refreshing non-sugar coating information in it's chapter but Florence has included her signature art style to get messages across to her audience too.

It has been sometime since I have read this book. It is somewhat of a journey trying to remember and acknowledge the problems that Given has raised about our society and if I'm being honest sometimes it slips my mind and I forget how to cope or deal with them. I think it is a good idea to keep rereading this book every now and then so that we are reminded of these things and feel more confident to stand up against this system.

Plus it is, personally, a very good read. I would recommend it to anyone 100%.

PS. Florence Given also has a podcast if you are interested in her work.

Here is my blog post where I mention her blog: My Podcast 2022 Blog Post

Things to talk to your partner about before moving in

 🏡🏡🏡

Moving in with someone for the first time can cause mixed feelings of excitement and anxiety at the same time therefore it is better to be over prepared rather than underprepared in my opinion.

It has been about a year now since I move out of my parents house and into a little granny flat with Justin, my partner, so I'm still pretty new at this stuff and am also still learning along the way. However before I moved out I remember reading and watching everything I can on the internet to see if I was ready to move out because it is a big step towards living a more independent life.

I'm going to share some things that I though to myself and what we spoke about before moving in together.

Keep in mind that this is only from our own experience and yours will be different. Do not let anyone force you into doing something that you are not comfortable with or confident in.

Again, I am not a financial consultant, all these things are based on my personal experiences so please seek out a financial consultant if needed.

1. How are we going to split expenses?

Moving out comes with a lot of responsibility especially when it comes to finances.

First figure out who you will be staying with and decide if they are trustworthy enough to stay with you because I have heard way to many stories where people moving together and someone calls it quits causing their flatmates real financial stress.

Once you have figured that out, how are you gonna pay expenses? There are many ways that you can do this. You can split everything equally amongst everyone or some people can pay for certain things while the rest pay for others. Sit down and talk about this with everyone involved and make sure everyone agrees to what you come up with.

2. How are we going to do groceries?

During the first few months of living on our own we decided to try out grocery shopping for ourselves and when our schedule got a bit much we decided to try HelloFresh. You can decide to get your groceries anyway that suits you and it is okay to try new things. Be open to new ways of shopping but try and stick to the budget that you have set up for yourself.

3. What if's.

This topic can cause loads of emotions and is difficult to talk about but rather safe than sorry I guess, right?

Before we moved out I made sure I covered as many 'what if' situations that I could from "what if we break up" to "what if we get a job offer somewhere else" and the list goes on. We made sure we were on the same page and that we had a rough action plan for each situation before hand, even if it never happens.

For example "what if we break up" would we still live together or would we move out, would we split our furniture and stuff equally or would we just essentially give ne person money and the other one gets the furniture. Painting a picture on what things would look like when things don't go to plan can be helpful especially beforehand because your emotions might be so strong during the situation, IF it happens, maybe you don't really take the time to think it through in the moment.

   4. Chores.

My most dreaded word. Honestly chores are super annoying but now living by ourselves I have realized that not having them done is even worse.

Have a conversation around what each of you expect out of each other, yourself and just in general when it comes to chores and be really honest here. Maybe you decide to split the chores and do it on a certain day or maybe you take turns or even each of you decide to clean for 10minutes each day. Try things out and see what does work and doesn't but remember to communicate honestly to your partner and be open to new ideas ect.

6. Are you joining accounts or not?

This can be a difficult decision for some people to make because, I personally feel that you need to truly know and trust someone wholeheartedly when it comes to money especially if it is your money.

Think about if this is what you want to do and if you trust your partner enough to do this. Keep your own and your partners spending habits in mind ,talk about your expectations and how this would work for you guys.

Just take your time to think about this because 'giving the power of control' over your finances is something that does occur in abusive relationships. Just makes sure this is what would be best for you and don't do it if you are not comfortable.

We currently do not have a joint account but will get one in the near future however with saying this we have decided that it would be better for us to still have our own separate bank accounts for personal use and a joint one for the bills because I would like us to feel like we each are still financially independent from each other too.

7. Emergencies.

Have a plan on what will happen incase of emergencies. This will be like how will you pay for it, is there someone else you can rely on to help if needed and will you be getting insurance?

I think that anything emergency situation should be kept in mind from breaking bones, pandemics to car crashes and medical emergencies.

Have a rough action plan or even just some finances that can help during these situations can help in the future if something does happen.

Be clear and honest on whatever you decide to do in this new phase of your life because it will impact your future whether you want it too or not. I do believe that you will make the right decision for you!

Podcasts I am loving at the moment 2022.

 🎧 🎧 🎧

This year I have been loving listening to different podcasts, especially on the way to work or doing everyday chores. It just makes me feel MORE relaxed and helps me get things done.

I have found myself always coming back to specific podcasts and wanted to share some I am currently loving with you so you can hopefully enjoy them too.

1.She's on The Money

Whenever I feel financially frustrated or lost I always listen to Victoria Divine and her team! This podcast feels like they are personally talking to me and always seem to inspire me to reflect on my finances so that I can hopefully become financially "free". They offer tips, tricks and share their thoughts on all financial problems from student loans to everyday expenses, aka Friday Drinks.

She's On The Money Instagram

Apart of the show includes money diaries from a variety of real life working people and their financial bumps which I find so refreshing to hear...Especially when social media is filled with most people showing off living there best life.

2.Exactly. With Florence Given

Last year I was introduced to Florence Given who has changed my perspective on things so much. She is a female activist who has been such an inspiration to me and many women. On her podcast she introduces many different topics from social media, emotional availability, sex, feminism, relationships and body image.

Florence Given Instagram

Florence speaks her mind and creates art that is simple, straight forward and just eye catching in general to be honest.

3.Talking Out Loud with Danae

Danae shares content that inspires women to feel more comfortable in their own skin even if they have "flaws". Danae creates an atmosphere where you feel a sense of safety and shares things that are not usually shared with audiences on mainstream media. She embraces her natural body in hopes that others will also follow in her footsteps.

Danae's Instagram

Her content is refreshing and is a daily reminder that not everything on social media is real and that we need to lift others and ourselves up instead of being broken and dragged down.

4.Pillow Talks

I have only just recently stumbled upon Pillow Talks and to be frank I am loving it. Vanessa (a certified sex therapist) and Xander (her partner) create content that help couples deal with all things relationship. They even share their own personal stories which makes me feel connected to them but they also share some helpful tips and tricks for their listeners. I like how at the end of their podcast episodes they usually end with listeners questions so that they get to cover more things that they might of missed or not even thought of.

Pillow Talks Instagram

I can't wait to listen to more of Pillow Talks to help me better my relationship in a space that feels safe and non-judgmental.

I'm always willing to listen to different people's stories and perspectives because I love learning from past experiences and with other people.

Celebrating my belated 20th birthday 2021!

 🎂 🎂 🎂

*No sponsors within this article, just my own personal recommendations*

This year, my birthday took place in a New Zealand Level 3 lockdown (again)however, it did not stop me from celebrating it once it was safe enough to do so.

I wanted to do something that I did not normally do on my weekends out but at the same time I wanted it to be more relaxed and laid-back.

After some researching I found the perfect place where I wanted to host it. A SPOOKY MINI PUTT PUTT COURSE right here in Wellington.

At the reception.

I loved spending time at The Witching Hour. It was fun with loads of creativity put into each course. Some courses were not really "doable" and it does tend to get busy, hence that you will feel the pressure. However it was still a lovely experience and was only $18.50 for one adult to play. The times that the Witching hour is open does vary on different days so it is always a good idea to double check or book with them online through facebook or email (Thewitchinghourminiputt@gmail.com).

I would recommend going here if you are looking for something to do here in Welly, whether it's on a rainy day or a get together.

One of the courses were a spooky spider theme.

Another course was a neon bat cave.

A birthday is not a birthday without ice-cream!

These are the Ben & Jerry's Sundaes on Cuba Street not too far away from The Witching Hour.

Free Workout Apps.

♥️ ♥️ ♥️

I love exercise because it helps me feels strong, happy and confident within my own body.

However with Covid-19 happening it caused  most gyms to close and reopen all year round. This year has made me realize that you do not actually need gyms in order to stay in shape, you only need yourself, self-love and the right amount of motivation.

Over time I have discovered apps that allow you to workout at home and the best thing about them is that they are FREE so here are my 2 favorites!

1. FitOn App

I have stumbled upon this app in the beginning of this year and I have been using it ever since! There is a lot of different types of workouts, intensities and many different trainers such as Gabrielle Union, Christine Bullock, Cassey Ho, Vytas and Jeanette Jenkins which leaves you to discover what works best with you and your own body. They recently added meditations too!

You can also choose different workout plans like build muscle, reduce stress, prenatal fit, postnatal fit, stay toned, lose weight and be more active plans but you still have the freedom of controlling what you do yourself.

There is also a feature where you can search for a specific workout, time length, equipment, muscle group, intensity or even trainer to help you choose the best workout for your day. There are 3 intensity levels for different workouts which gives you the opportunity to choose which one to do depending on how you feel.

For premium users there is also different healthy recipes for you from breakfast all the way to dinner, including snacks!

There are challenges each month for you to join and loads of free advice to keep you going and learning more about fitness, nutrition and wellness.

You can add and motivate your friends and family. There is even a FitOn party feature where you can video call while doing a workout to keep you connected to others and motivated.

If you would like there is also a feature of set "workout classes" to do at home! This is where a certain workout will be done at a specific time that you can join so you can plan your day around that or if you like the element of a class you would not have to miss it as much.

I highly recommend this app for at home workouts because it has so many things and makes working out fun!

Here is the link to the FitOn App.

2.Nike Training Club App.

I actually used this app before Covid and I loved it. Even though I haven't used it in awhile I still highly recommend.

It allows you to choose your own workout plan but you can also do what you want when you want.

The exercises are split into workout focus, muscle group or even the type of equipment used.

The exercises have different time ranges from short 5 minutes to as long as 47 minutes.

The workout focus includes endurance, mobility, strength and yoga workouts. The muscle groups are split into abs &core, arms & shoulders and glutes & legs.

There is 3 equipment options where you can choose no equipment, basic equipment or full equipment. You can see how to do the workout before hand and even see what is coming up (or how far your next break is).

Here is a link to the Nike Training Club website.

Both of these apps are my go to apps to in order to get a free worthy workout.

Do you have any free go to workout apps? I would love to hear what they are and maybe even try them out.
